It was a scary morning in Pune’s Shanipar area as a fire broke out in a five-storey building housing a hostel, resulting in a tragic death and the rescue of over 40 girl students. The fire started around 1:30 am on the ground floor of the building, according to Devendra Potphode, the chief fire officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Thankfully, forty-two female students on the second floor were safely evacuated as the fire spread. The fire brigade team received an emergency call and quickly responded to the blaze, which originated in an accounting academy on the ground floor. Residents also played a crucial role in helping evacuate the students from the hostel before firefighters arrived.

Tragically, a watchman in his early 40s was found inside a room on the ground floor with fatal burn injuries. He was rushed to Sassoon General Hospital but was declared dead by doctors. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with officials working to determine what sparked the deadly blaze.

It was a harrowing experience for all involved, but thanks to the quick actions of the fire brigade and residents, many lives were saved. Our thoughts are with the family of the watchman who lost his life in this tragic incident.
