The political drama unfolded in Pune today as the BJP and NCP engaged in a tug-of-war in the Khadakwasla and Vadgaonsheri constituencies. Initially set for a friendly contest, last-minute calls from Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar halted the candidacies of BJP’s Jagdish Mulik and NCP’s Datta Dhankawade.

The Grand Alliance (Mahayuti) had planned for a friendly fight in Vadgaonsheri and Khadakwasla constituencies, with Mulik and Dhankawade set to contest. However, calls from Fadnavis and Pawar changed the course of events.

Mulik, a former MLA, had expressed interest in contesting the Lok Sabha elections but was denied candidature. With rumors of the rejection of current Vadgaonsheri MLA Sunil Tingre’s candidacy, Mulik prepared to enter the race against Tingre. However, a call from Fadnavis instructed him not to file the nomination, assuring him a position in the Maharashtra Legislative Council instead.

In Khadakwasla, BJP’s Bhimrao Tapkir successfully filed his nomination, while NCP’s Dhankawade received a call from Pawar to hold off on filing. The sudden changes have left political analysts speculating about the future of these constituencies and the Mahayuti alliance.

With the election dynamics shifting, all eyes are on the upcoming Assembly polls and the potential realignment of party interests.
