In a recent development, the Deccan Police cyber squad has managed to recover a total of 30 stolen mobile phones, with a combined value of ₹5.5 lakh. The team used the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system, which is accessible on the Department of Telecommunications website, to track down the stolen devices.
The CEIR system, overseen by the Central Government’s Department of Telecommunications, enables users to block their mobile numbers in case of theft or loss. By filing a complaint at a police station, individuals can take advantage of this system to prevent unauthorized use of their devices. Moreover, users can also check the status of their lost or stolen phones through the CEIR platform.
Led by Senior Inspector Girisha Nimbalkar and Police Inspector (Crime) Prasad Raut, along with Constables Uma Palve, Saroja Dewar, and Supriya Sonawane, the Deccan Police Station team successfully utilized the CEIR system to locate the stolen mobile phones.
Upon discovering that several of the lost or stolen mobile numbers were still active, the cyber team gathered information about the users of these devices. Subsequently, the police reached out to these individuals and managed to recover a total of 30 mobile phones, valued at ₹5.5 lakh, from various districts within just one month.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Additional CP Praveen Patil and DCP (Zone 1) Sandeep Singh Gill. This successful recovery highlights the effectiveness of utilizing technology and collaboration between law enforcement agencies to combat mobile phone theft.
