Gig workers in Pune and other major cities have decided to go on strike this Diwali to protest against the exploitation they face on various online platforms. The strike is being organized by the Gig and Platform Services Workers Union (GIPSWU), which is the first women-led union of its kind in the country.

Nisha Pawar, the Maharashtra in-charge of GIPSWU, emphasized the need for gig workers to be recognized as formal employees to ensure they receive the same rights and benefits as traditional workers. This includes access to minimum wages, health and safety protections, and social security benefits such as employee provident funds and insurance schemes.

The strike is expected to disrupt services on popular platforms like Ola, Swiggy, Zomato, and Urban Company, leaving customers without access to these services for the day. The union is calling for an end to oppressive conditions imposed by companies and for the government to establish a regulatory framework for online platforms to ensure the fair treatment of gig workers.

Overall, the strike aims to bring attention to the challenges faced by gig workers and to push for meaningful change in the gig economy.
