Hey Pune folks, it’s time to get ready to cast your vote in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly General Elections on November 20, 2024! District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase is urging disabled and senior citizens to actively participate in the voting process. To make it easier for them, special facilities like wheelchairs, magnifying glasses, ramps, and even volunteers will be available at polling stations.

With a total of 8,462 polling stations across 21 Assembly constituencies in the district, there are 90,134 registered disabled voters. The district has been working hard to ensure that everyone can vote, conducting surveys to map out disabled voters and appointing officers to oversee efforts in each constituency.

To make voting more inclusive, the District Model Committee on Accessible Elections (DMCAE) and the Vidhan Sabha Constituency-wise Accessible Elections Committee (ACCAE) have been set up. These committees will monitor the implementation of facilities for disabled voters across the district.

Special amenities at polling stations include barrier-free access, transport facilities, separate queues, and even the option to vote from home. The district will also provide wheelchairs, magnifying glasses, and volunteers to assist disabled and senior voters. Student volunteers from various organizations will also be on hand to help out.

To raise awareness among disabled voters, “Disabled Icons” have been appointed to lead campaigns on social media and through advertisements. Additionally, voter registration drives and awareness programs have been organized to encourage more people with disabilities to register and vote.

The District Social Welfare Officer, Radhakisan Deodhe, is confident that these efforts will lead to a higher voter turnout among disabled individuals. So, let’s all do our part and make sure that everyone has the opportunity to vote in the upcoming elections!
