Dr. Ajit Ranade, the Vice-Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), has officially stepped down from his position amidst a controversial eligibility issue. The drama started when allegations arose claiming that Dr. Ranade did not have the necessary qualifications for the role. This led to a fact-finding committee being formed by then-Chancellor Dr. Bibek Debroy, which recommended the cancellation of Dr. Ranade’s appointment. However, Dr. Ranade fought back by challenging this decision in court, resulting in a stay on Dr. Debroy’s action. Following this, Dr. Debroy resigned from his position as Chancellor.

After the appointment of Dr. Sanjeev Sanyal as the new Chancellor, he decided to withdraw the letter of action against Dr. Ranade, effectively putting an end to the controversy. In his resignation letter, Dr. Ranade mentioned personal reasons for his decision to step down. He expressed his gratitude to the Board of Management, the Servants of India Society, faculty, staff, students, and all stakeholders for the opportunity to lead the prestigious institute for the past two and a half years. Dr. Ranade made it clear that his resignation was not a result of any wrongdoing or disqualification regarding his appointment as Vice-Chancellor in 2021. It seems like the GIPE is now ready to move forward under new leadership.
