As Pune settles back into its normal routine post-Diwali celebrations, a troubling trend of theft has emerged in certain areas of the city. Dhankawadi, Kharadi, and Wanowrie have seen a spate of incidents, with two arrests already made and one suspect still on the run.
In Balaji Nagar on Pune-Satara Road, a woman fell victim to a thief who snatched her mangalsutra, valued at Rs 25,000. The incident occurred while she was walking with her daughter-in-law, and the thief made a quick getaway. The case has been lodged at the Sahakar Nagar Police Station, where Assistant Police Inspector Sagar Patil is leading the investigation.
Over on the Pune-Ahilyanagar Highway, a tempo driver found himself at the mercy of robbers who made off with mobile phones and cash amounting to Rs 10,680. The driver, who had pulled over due to a breakdown, was threatened by Yogesh Sonawane (19) and an accomplice. While Sonawane has been apprehended by the Chandan Nagar Police Station, his partner in crime remains at large. Assistant Police Inspector Siddhanath Khandekar is heading the inquiry.
The Wanowrie area also witnessed a theft as a woman leaving the Maharashtra State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) had her gold necklace snatched while walking. The quick response by Wanowrie Police Station led to the arrest of the culprit, Vitthal Manohar Khonde (31), who hails from Wanowrie.
With these incidents highlighting the uptick in thefts, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities promptly. Stay safe, Pune!
