Developers in Pune are making strides towards securing water from Pune Zilla Parishad and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, a move that is crucial for PMRDA’s approval. This development will impact around 231 villages in the region.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing a water shortage, requiring 24 TMC of water but only receiving 16.36 TMC from Bhama-Askhed and Khadakwasla dams until 2032. Meanwhile, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), serving a population of 35 lakh, is struggling to meet the water demand, leading to water supply on alternate days. Both corporations are finding it challenging to extend their water supply beyond their current jurisdiction.
The PMRDA commissioner has stressed the importance of the corporations providing water to villages within a 5 km radius of their boundaries, in adherence to government regulations. However, concerns have been raised by residents like Vijay Pandey regarding the reliability of the water supply for these projects, as there is a lack of clarity on the total water availability.
The situation highlights the pressing need for sustainable water management in the region to ensure adequate supply for all residents and upcoming projects.
