The redevelopment of Saras Baug Chowpatty in Pune has hit a roadblock due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections. The project, which was initially approved by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) ten months ago, has been put on hold, causing a delay in the Rs. 18.5 crore redevelopment plan.

Saras Baug Chowpatty holds a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike, with attractions such as the Shri Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir, Peshwe Energy Park, and a variety of food stalls. Recognized by the Maharashtra State Government as a clean and food-friendly destination, it is on par with Mumbai’s famous Chowpatty.

The journey to redevelop Saras Baug Chowpatty has been a challenging one, starting with the closure of unauthorized shops due to encroachments. The PMC sought redevelopment proposals from architects, leading to the approval of a new plan that saw the budget escalate from Rs. 8 crore to Rs. 18.5 crore.

Despite the approval of the revised plan, the project remains at a standstill. The PMC administration attributes the delay to the MCC, stating that all necessary procedures were completed before its enforcement. The redevelopment is set to include commercial spaces, aesthetic improvements, and infrastructure enhancements once work commences.

Deputy Commissioner of the PMC Encroachment Department, Somnath Bankar, mentioned that the project is on hold due to the code of conduct, but will resume post-election. The delay has impacted local businesses and the overall appeal of Saras Baug Chowpatty, but stakeholders are hopeful for a prompt restart after the elections.

The delay in redeveloping Saras Baug Chowpatty highlights the challenges of urban development projects amidst electoral regulations. With the promise of enhanced facilities and amenities, the project’s resumption post-election is eagerly awaited by the community.
