If you’re living in Pune or Pimpri-Chinchwad, you might soon see a change in your electricity meters. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is gearing up to install smart prepaid low-pressure electricity meters for free to all types of customers. This includes domestic, commercial, industrial, and others. The plan is to cover areas like Ambegaon, Mulshi, Velhe, Khed, Maval, and Haveli talukas under the Pune circle.

The rollout of these smart meters will start at MSEDCL offices and staff quarters before expanding to other areas. Already, hundreds of smart meters have been installed in various locations like Nagpur, Gondia, Wardha, Bhandara, and Chandrapur.

In the Pune Circle alone, there are around 320 staff quarters and 250 offices that will undergo the installation process starting next week. While both prepaid and postpaid options will initially be available, the goal is to eventually make prepaid the only option. These smart meters aim to address issues such as incorrect readings and inaccurate bills, providing consumers with real-time information about their electricity usage on their phones.

Thanks to subsidies from the central government, smart meters will be installed in nearly all homes and offices except for agricultural consumers. Mahavitaran, the related company, will provide and maintain these meters for free for ten years.

The implementation of smart meters comes at a time when electricity demands are on the rise, prompting a revised area distribution plan to ensure reliable power supply. With the ability to monitor and manage electricity costs, consumers can take control of their usage and plan accordingly. These modern meters are not only cost-effective but also user-friendly, allowing consumers to track their usage and make payments via mobile phones. Even if the recharge runs out, power supply will continue during certain hours and holidays.

The adoption of smart meters is already underway in states like Jammu Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, signaling a shift towards more efficient and convenient electricity management for consumers.
