Heavy rains in Pune have once again highlighted the issues of inadequate drainage systems in certain areas of the city. Despite the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) sanctioning Rs 55 crore three years ago to address heavy rain problems in Dhanori, Kalas, and Wadgaon Sheri, the recent rains have caused chaos in these regions.

Residents in Dhanori, Vishrantwadi, Wadgaon Sheri, and other areas faced severe flooding and waterlogging after heavy rains on Tuesday. Roads were submerged, and traffic was disrupted due to the overflow of water on the streets. This situation is not new, as similar incidents occurred in November 2021, prompting concerns from corporators about the lack of proper drainage infrastructure.

The PMC had allocated the Rs 55 crore fund to improve rainwater drains, sewage channels, and culverts in the eastern region of Pune. Some works were carried out, such as widening culverts and laying rain drains in specific areas. However, the current PMC administration lacks consolidated information on these projects, leading to confusion about the effectiveness of the allocated funds.

The recent transfers of key officials have further complicated the situation, with new officials unaware of the measures taken to prevent flooding in Dhanori, Lohegaon, and Yerawada. Despite claims that the Rs 55 crore fund was used for various locations in Pune, specific details about the scope and impact of the projects remain unclear.

In the past two years, some works have been completed in Dhanori, including the laying of rain drains at Laxmi Nagar Society and Dhanori Police Chowki. However, more needs to be done to prevent future flooding incidents in these areas.

Prithviraj BP, Additional Commissioner of PMC, has assured residents that they will collect information on the works done in Dhanori and take necessary measures to prevent flooding in the future. Hopefully, with proper planning and execution, Pune can avoid similar chaos during heavy rainfall in the coming years.
