Hey there, Pune folks! It looks like we’ve got a bit of a blood shortage situation going on in our city. With the Diwali holidays and the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections happening, blood donation camps have taken a hit, leading to low stock levels in many blood banks.

Sassoon General Hospital’s blood bank is feeling the heat, with only enough stock to last five days. And it’s not just them – many other hospitals and blood banks are in a similar predicament. This means that relatives of patients are having to frantically search for donors to help out.

Every year, we see a drop in blood donations during the Diwali season. With colleges closed and fewer workplace donation camps happening, it’s no surprise that we’re facing a shortage. But this year, things have been made worse by the Maharashtra Assembly elections, which have put a damper on the usual blood donation drives organized by political parties.

Pune, being a major medical hub, needs around 1,500 blood bags daily to meet the demand. Unfortunately, we’re only able to supply about half of that at the moment. That’s where you come in – blood banks are calling on housing societies and regular donors to step up and help fill the gap.

Donation camps are being organized in housing societies, and private companies are being urged to resume their donation drives now that Diwali is over. The shortage is expected to last for another couple of weeks, so every drop counts.

Dr. Atul Kulkarni from Jankalyan Blood Centre is stressing the importance of regular donors coming forward to help out. They normally maintain a 10 to 15-day stock, but right now, they’re down to just a few days’ worth. And Dr. Mangesh Sagale from Sassoon General Hospital’s blood bank is also feeling the pressure, with demand rising and stock depleting.

So, Pune peeps, let’s roll up our sleeves and do our bit to help out those in need. Donating blood can truly save lives, so let’s come together and make a difference. Remember, every drop counts!
