In a surprising turn of events, Bapusaheb Pathare of the Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) has emerged victorious in the Vadgaonsheri constituency by a margin of 5,000 votes. The incumbent MLA, Sunil Tingre, initially led the race for the first 22 rounds, but Pathare managed to overtake him in the final round to clinch the win.
Vadgaonsheri, which includes prominent areas like Koregaon Park, Yerawada, Kalyani Nagar, and Viman Nagar, witnessed significant anti-incumbency sentiments against Tingre due to alleged unfulfilled promises. Pathare capitalized on this discontent during his campaign, highlighting the need for change in the constituency.
Moreover, Tingre’s association with the controversial Kalyani Nagar Porsche incident further tarnished his image, leading to a decline in his popularity among voters. The incident, where he was accused of favoring a minor involved in the case, raised concerns about his credibility as a leader.
With a total of 4.89 lakh voters and a voter turnout of 55.71%, the electoral battle in Vadgaonsheri was expected to be closely contested. Various campaign meetings were organized, with Mahavikas Aghadi leaders, such as Supriya Sule and Sushma Andhare, openly criticizing Tingre and throwing their support behind Pathare.
Although Pathare was initially expected to win by a large margin, Tingre’s strong performance kept the race neck and neck until the final round. However, Pathare’s late surge and eventual victory by 5,000 votes marked the end of Tingre’s tenure as the MLA of Vadgaonsheri.
