The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made a bold move to improve traffic flow in the city by removing a 2-km stretch of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) from Swargate to Hadapsar. This decision comes after the successful discontinuation of a 3.6 km BRTS stretch on Pune-Ahmednagar Road last year, all in an effort to reduce accidents and congestion on busy routes.

Commuters are breathing a sigh of relief as they welcome this change, noting that the dedicated BRTS lanes for PMPML buses were actually causing more harm than good in terms of traffic issues. With the BRTS lanes now gone, traffic flow is expected to see a significant improvement.

The Katraj-Swargate-Hadapsar route, which was launched as a pilot BRTS project back in 2007, covered a total of 11.5 km. While the Katraj to Swargate corridor saw success in its revamp, the Swargate to Hadapsar section never quite made it to a dedicated BRTS lane due to the presence of defence establishments along the route.

Officials from PMPML, Traffic Police, and the RTO have all agreed that the bus stops were taking up too much space, causing congestion, and the placement of bus stands in the middle of the road was leading to accidents as pedestrians were forced to cross the road. With the removal of the BRTS lanes, commuters can expect a smoother and safer journey.
