The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made a bold move to remove a 2-km stretch of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) from Swargate to Hadapsar in an effort to tackle traffic congestion and improve safety on this busy route. This decision comes after the discontinuation of a 3.6 km BRTS stretch on Pune-Ahmednagar Road last year, following similar concerns raised by commuters.

The BRTS project, which was launched as a pilot in 2007 along the Katraj-Swargate-Hadapsar route, has faced challenges along the Swargate to Hadapsar section due to the presence of defense establishments. This has prevented the creation of a dedicated BRTS lane in this area, leading to traffic issues.

Factors such as bus stop placement and pedestrian safety concerns have influenced the decision to remove the BRTS lanes. The placement of bus stops along the route has contributed to traffic congestion, while pedestrians have been forced to cross the road at unsafe points, resulting in accidents.

The removal of the BRTS lanes is expected to bring about positive changes, including improved traffic flow, reduced accidents, and increased commuter convenience. With regular traffic lanes having more space, congestion is predicted to ease, and the number of accidents is expected to decrease as pedestrians no longer need to cross the road at dangerous points. Overall, these changes are set to make commuting smoother and more efficient for daily travelers in Pune.
