Pune residents may soon notice a new addition to their meals as Market Yard receives a shipment of onions from Afghanistan. These onions are known for their large size and vibrant red color, and are currently being sold at ₹40 per kilogram in the wholesale market. While primarily purchased by businesses like hotels and professional buyers, these onions have yet to hit the domestic retail market.
Despite the arrival of Afghan onions, local onion prices have remained stable due to a decrease in supply. Reports suggest that there has been a 30% drop in onion arrivals, which has helped keep prices steady for locally grown produce.
To address the ongoing onion shortage in the country, imports were necessary to stabilize prices. A shipment of 18 tonnes of Afghan onions, brought in by Narwade & Co., has been snapped up by traders from Pune city and the Chakan area.
Although 90 trucks entered the market on Tuesday, with 80 of them carrying newly harvested onions from Nagar and Beed districts, the damage caused by the retreating monsoon has resulted in lower-than-usual arrivals. New onions in the wholesale market are currently priced between ₹35 and ₹50 per kilogram, depending on quality.
Furthermore, the availability of old onions in storage has decreased, further impacting the overall supply. On the same day, 10 truckloads of onions from Nashik arrived in Pune, fetching higher prices of ₹50 to ₹60 per kilogram in the wholesale market.
