Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) suffered a major blow in the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, failing to secure a single seat out of the 128 it contested across the state. Even Amit Thackeray, the party president’s son, faced defeat in his first-ever electoral race. The MNS candidates in Pune city also faced losses in all four assembly constituencies they contested.
In response to this setback, Raj Thackeray is working to rejuvenate the party and boost morale among members. A crucial meeting is scheduled in Pune tomorrow, where Thackeray will engage with defeated candidates and party workers from Pune and western Maharashtra.
The MNS had previously offered unconditional support to the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance during the Lok Sabha elections, hoping for a reciprocal gesture in the Assembly elections. However, no alliance was formed, forcing the MNS to go it alone.
The lack of a pre-poll alliance reportedly affected the party’s preparations, with many leaders and workers caught off guard by the absence of a formal partnership. As a result, the MNS failed to secure any seats despite pockets of strong support in certain areas.
Raj Thackeray has already held similar meetings in Mumbai and Thane, with the Pune meeting expected to focus on understanding the reasons behind the electoral defeat and devising a new strategy. The party’s organizational structure and discipline will also be scrutinized.
Despite campaigning efforts, including rallies in Pune, the MNS was unable to make a significant impact. The upcoming local body elections will be a crucial test for the party’s survival, with Thackeray’s leadership pivotal in revitalizing the MNS and uniting its members.
