Hey Pune folks, it looks like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the irrigation department are in hot water for neglecting the Mula-Mutha River and its tributaries, leading to severe flooding in July. A committee appointed by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has called them out for failing to address encroachments and river narrowing.

The committee’s recommendations include removing encroachments, penalizing debris dumping, and intensifying drain cleaning efforts. They also want unauthorized structures in floodplains demolished to prevent future floods. However, action is still pending since the report was submitted in September.

Heavy rainfall in July caused chaos in Pune, with areas like Singhagad Road and housing societies like Ekta Nagari bearing the brunt of the flooding. Dr. Bhosale set up a committee to investigate and the report, initially kept under wraps, was finally released on 27th November.

The report highlights illegal encroachments near Bhide Bridge and suggests marking floodplain zones to identify high-risk areas. Dr. Bhosale has instructed officials to speed up the removal of obstructive structures and ensure drains are clear to prevent waterlogging.

The committee also wants criminal cases filed against those responsible for encroachments and debris dumping. They emphasize the need for coordinated efforts from various departments to tackle these issues and improve flood management.

Dr. Bhosale stresses the importance of acting quickly to protect Pune residents from future disasters. Let’s hope the PMC acts swiftly on the recommendations to ensure the Mutha River can handle water flow efficiently. Stay safe, Pune!
