Pune’s Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) is facing scrutiny from the Pune Police due to concerns over its effectiveness in improving traffic flow and reducing congestion. The system, part of the city’s Smart City initiative, has come under fire for its fixed signal timings that do not adapt well to fluctuating traffic conditions.

Last week, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar raised these concerns with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner, calling for a thorough traffic study to assess how the signal timings can be improved. The police have requested key reports on signal synchronization, impact analysis, and comparative reports to determine the system’s effectiveness.

Manisha Sheketkar, Superintendent Engineer at the PMC Electrical Department, acknowledged the concerns and noted that the responsibility for the ATMS project now falls on the PMC since the dissolution of the Pune Smart City Development Company Limited (PSCDCL). The system, costing ₹102 crore for installation across 125 intersections, is fully operational, but payments have not been made pending further assessment.

The collaboration between the PMC and the police aims to refine the ATMS and align it with the city’s traffic demands. The outcome of the traffic study and resulting adjustments will determine how effectively the system addresses Pune’s traffic challenges in the future.
