Pune woke up to its coldest morning of the year on Wednesday, with the mercury dropping to a chilly 9.9°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) pointed to Cyclonic Storm Fengal as the culprit behind this sudden shift in weather, causing significant changes across the region.

The development of Cyclonic Storm Fengal in the South West Bay of Bengal has led to moisture depletion in Maharashtra, intensifying the cold conditions. IMD predicts that temperatures will continue to drop in the next 24 hours as Fengal moves north-northwestward, affecting Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and Kerala.

While Maharashtra has not been directly affected by cloud cover, reduced relative humidity and strengthened northern winds have led to nighttime cooling. Pune recorded the second-lowest minimum temperature in the state, with Ahmadnagar taking the top spot at 9.4°C. Key temperature metrics for Pune include a minimum temperature of 9.9°C (2.9°C below normal) and a maximum temperature of 28.4°C (also below normal).

Other temperature data across Maharashtra includes Mahabaleshwar at 11.8°C, Haveli at 9.1°C, and NDA at 8.9°C (the coldest in the Pune region). The weather outlook for Pune until December 3 is expected to feature persistently low temperatures and hazy conditions during the early morning hours.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the IMD Pune weather division, explained that the cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal is depleting moisture in Maharashtra and central India, leading to increased northern winds and further drops in nighttime temperatures. Stay warm, Pune!
