In a heartwarming gesture, a 33-year-old naval veteran from Pune has saved the lives of five people by donating his organs after being declared brain dead. The Southern Command Hospital in Pune played a crucial role in coordinating the organ donation process.
Following the protocols, the veteran’s family was counseled about the option of organ donation and they immediately agreed to the noble deed. The transplant coordinator wasted no time and quickly initiated the process. The liver was transported to the Army Hospital (R&R) while the heart was sent to a hospital in Mumbai.
Two kidneys were transplanted to a 31-year-old veteran and an 18-year-old renal failure patient at the same hospital. Additionally, the cornea was donated to the Eye Bank at Armed Forces Medical College.
The successful organ donation process was made possible by the dedicated efforts of the hospital staff, including the transport coordinator, ICU team, doctors, and nurses. Major General B Nambiar, Commandant of Command Hospital, Pune, played a pivotal role in overseeing the operations.
The Military and Maharashtra police also played a crucial role in facilitating a green corridor from the airport to the hospital at short notice, ensuring timely transportation of the organs. This selfless act of organ donation has not only saved lives but also highlighted the importance of coming together as a community to support those in need.
