Hey Pune peeps, here’s the latest scoop on your water situation! Despite having plenty of water stored up in the Khadakwasla Project reservoirs, it looks like the city’s water allocation for the next year is still up in the air. The Water Resources Department hasn’t made a final decision yet, but they’re expected to hash it out during an upcoming canal advisory committee meeting. This meeting will be chaired by the district’s Guardian Minister, and it’s set to happen after the new state cabinet is formed post the recent Assembly Elections.
Pune relies on water from a bunch of dams to meet its annual demand, and right now the reservoirs are looking pretty full. The Khadakwasla Project itself is sitting at 93.55% capacity, with 27.27 TMC of water on hand. So, no need to panic about shortages just yet!
Usually, the water allocation decision is made by mid-October, but this year it’s been delayed due to the elections. The Water Resources Department has reached out to the Chief Secretary for guidance, but they’re still waiting to hear back.
This decision is a big deal for Pune and the rest of Western Maharashtra. With the city’s population growing and more villages being added, the demand for water is on the rise. The Pune Municipal Corporation has asked for more water, proposing a quota of 21 TMC based on the current population of 7.6 million.
Right now, Pune’s official water entitlement is 11.60 TMC, but an extra 3 TMC has been temporarily allocated to meet the city’s needs. The final decision on the PMC’s request for 21 TMC will only come after the State Government gives the thumbs up.
The post-election political uncertainty has caused even more delays, leaving Pune residents and city officials in a bit of a bind as they get ready for the year ahead. Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing saga!
