The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is cracking down on overdue property taxes, with a targeted collection goal of ₹2,728 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year. However, as of November, only ₹1,775 crore has been recovered, leaving a substantial ₹950 crore gap to be filled by March 31.

Due to delays caused by staff involvement in elections earlier in the year, the PMC is now implementing aggressive measures to recover the outstanding dues. This includes sealing properties of defaulters within two days of resuming the drive and deploying band squads to shame non-compliant taxpayers into paying up.

With pending property tax dues in Pune surpassing ₹10,000 crore, the PMC has assigned five dedicated teams to recover dues that are not under legal disputes. Challenges such as the election code of conduct and staff transfers have hindered previous recovery efforts, but the civic body is determined to make up for lost time.

The PMC’s renewed efforts to collect overdue property taxes highlight its commitment to financial sustainability and adherence to tax regulations. By combining legal actions with public awareness campaigns, the civic body aims to bridge the significant revenue gap effectively and ensure compliance from taxpayers.
