Hey Pune folks, it’s time to talk about a serious issue plaguing our city – waste burning. The Pune Air Action Hub recently released a report highlighting the prevalence of waste burning in various areas of the city. According to a citizen survey conducted by the hub, a whopping 75% of respondents reported witnessing chronic burning spots in their neighborhoods, with 33% experiencing waste burning on a daily basis.

Despite the widespread occurrence of waste burning, many citizens seem unaware of the complaint mechanisms available to them. This points to a clear need for increased awareness about how to report instances of waste burning in the city. Additionally, an analysis of complaints lodged revealed significant delays in response times and other gaps in the grievance redressal process.

The hub members have taken proactive steps by submitting their report to key officials, including the Additional Commissioner and the SWM Head, to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of open waste burning on air quality. Recommendations from the report have also been shared with the MPCB to address this pressing issue.

Among the key findings of the report is the observation that certain wards like Hadapsar Mundhwa, Aundh Baner, and Wanowrie Ramtekdi have shown a higher incidence of waste burning. However, it was noted that only a small percentage of citizens who witness waste burning actually report it. This highlights the need for better communication about the complaint process and the legal implications of waste burning.

To address these challenges, the hub has put forth several recommendations, including the establishment of a dedicated 24×7 complaint number for waste burning, the creation of response squads for immediate action, and increased awareness campaigns about the reporting process. With winter approaching, the issue of waste burning is expected to worsen, underscoring the importance of swift action by city officials.

It’s clear that waste burning is a serious problem in Pune, but with concerted efforts from citizens and authorities alike, we can work towards a cleaner and healthier environment for all. Let’s all do our part to combat waste burning and protect our city from further pollution.
