Market Yard in Nagpur, known for its dominance in the orange market, is facing some unexpected competition from Rajasthan. The consumer preference for Rajasthani oranges has been on the rise, challenging the traditional popularity of Nagpur oranges.
In the past month, around 10 to 15 tonnes of oranges from Rajasthan have been making their way into Market Yard daily. These oranges are smaller but boast a more vibrant color, and consumers are loving their sweet taste. Traders have noted that Rajasthani oranges are selling well at wholesale prices ranging from ₹20 to ₹50 per kilogram.
Despite the influx of Rajasthani oranges, Amravati continues to contribute significantly to the market with 30 to 40 tonnes of oranges arriving daily. These oranges are larger with thicker peels and a sour-sweet flavor, priced between ₹15 to ₹40 per kilogram. However, consumers seem to be leaning towards the sweeter Rajasthani variety.
The orange season is expected to last for another month and a half, with the arrival of the Mrigbahar crop in mid-January projected to increase the supply of oranges in the region, meeting both local demand and export needs.
Despite the competition, wholesale prices for oranges have remained stable compared to last year, providing some relief to growers and traders in the face of increasing competition from Rajasthan.
