Hello Pune! It’s time to talk about the latest development on the Katraj-Kondhwa road project. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has stepped in to push things forward and get this long-delayed project back on track.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been facing challenges in acquiring the necessary land for the 4-kilometre stretch of the road. To address this issue, the PMC has decided to reduce the road width to 50 meters for now. However, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is ready to develop the road at its original width of 84 meters if the PMC can complete the required land acquisition.
Gadkari has instructed the PMC to speed up the land acquisition process to resolve the pending issues. Approximately 17,200 square meters of land costing ₹124 crore is needed for the additional 34 meters of width. A proposal will be sent to the State Government to secure 50% of the funding needed for this land acquisition.
The Katraj-Kondhwa road is a crucial route for heavy vehicle traffic from Nagar Road and Solapur Highway. The widening of this road to 84 meters was inaugurated by Gadkari back in 2018, but progress has been slow due to land acquisition challenges.
Despite tenders being floated for the widening project six years ago, the project has been at a standstill. Landowners have been hesitant to hand over land in exchange for Transferable Development Rights (TDR) or Floor Space Index (FSI). To address these issues, the government allocated ₹180 crore to the PMC six months ago for land acquisition.
The decision to reduce the road width to 50 meters is a temporary solution to move the project forward. However, Gadkari’s intervention has sparked renewed efforts to complete the road as originally planned. Stay tuned for more updates on this important infrastructure project in Pune!
