Shivajinagar, December 2, 2024: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been granted an extension by a Pune court to appear in a case related to his comments about Hindu ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The court has given Gandhi until January 10, 2025, to appear, citing his parliamentary responsibilities during the ongoing Lok Sabha session.
Gandhi’s lawyer filed an application explaining that his duties as a Member of Parliament and Leader of the Opposition have kept him occupied during the winter session of Parliament, hence unable to appear in court on the scheduled date of December 2. The court had earlier issued summons to Gandhi, which were reportedly delayed in delivery due to logistical errors.
During the hearing, Satyaki Savarkar’s representative argued for a non-bailable warrant against Gandhi due to his absence despite receiving the summons. However, Gandhi’s legal representative highlighted his parliamentary obligations and sought permission for his absence, which was granted by the court with the directive that Gandhi must appear at the next hearing.
The court also instructed Gandhi to refrain from making controversial or derogatory statements about Savarkar until the case is resolved. The next hearing is set for January 10, 2025, giving Gandhi a final chance to comply with the court’s orders.
The case against Rahul Gandhi originated from comments he allegedly made about Veer Savarkar, leading to legal action and criticism from various sources.
