The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical weather update for Pune and surrounding regions as the southwest monsoon arrives earlier than expected. With heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the forecast, residents are urged to remain vigilant over the next 72 hours.

Alerts have been issued for various regions in Maharashtra and South India, with red alerts for Sindhudurg and Kolhapur indicating a high likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Orange alerts have been issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Satara, and Thane, while a yellow alert is in place for other districts during the same period.

The southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 9, two days ahead of schedule. This early onset is expected to bring heavy rains across Maharashtra and South India, with significant rainfall predicted for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Pune.

Coastal regions in Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry are also experiencing heavy rainfall, while Kerala has seen significant rainfall in Thrissur and other areas. The National Centre for Coastal Research has warned of high waves and coastal erosion along Kerala’s coast, advising fishermen and coastal residents to exercise caution and follow evacuation orders.

Overall, residents in the affected regions are urged to stay safe, follow local authorities’ instructions, and avoid the beach and sea activities during this period of inclement weather.
