Hey there, Pune folks! Big news coming your way – the Maharashtra government is finally rolling out pending pensions for citizens who were imprisoned during the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977. After the model code of conduct for the assembly elections wrapped up, a whopping Rs 9.75 crore has been sent to district collectors across the state, with Pune district snagging a cool Rs 1.47 crore.
So, who’s getting this pension money in Pune? Well, there are 586 eligible beneficiaries who are set to receive their monthly honorariums soon. These folks have been categorized based on how long they were in prison during the Emergency, with payouts of Rs 2,500, Rs 5,000, or Rs 10,000 per month. The funds will be directly transferred to their bank accounts in the coming weeks.
For the 2024–25 fiscal year, the government has approved a total of Rs 50.63 crore for this pension scheme, and a chunk of that – Rs 9.75 crore – has already been handed out for the last quarter of the year in Pune. That’s a sweet deal of Rs 49.25 lakh per month for the district.
The Under Secretary, Bhagyashree Bhaidkar, has given the green light for the distribution of these funds, and district collectors will be in charge of making sure the money gets to the right people.
This pension scheme was actually first approved by former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis back in 2018, but got axed in 2020 due to financial issues during the COVID-19 crisis. But now, with a new leadership in place, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have brought it back to life, providing much-needed financial support for those impacted by the Emergency.
And just so you know how the money is being divvied up: if you were imprisoned for more than a month, you’re getting Rs 10,000 a month. If you’re the surviving spouse of someone in that category, you’ll be getting Rs 5,000. And if you were in prison for less than a month, you’re looking at Rs 5,000 a month, with surviving spouses getting Rs 2,500.
That’s a wrap for now, Pune peeps! Stay tuned for more updates on this heartwarming initiative.
