He recently launched his book “प्रादेशिक विषमतेचा नवा आयाम” along with co-author Dr Savita Kulkarni, shedding light on the multidimensional deprivation index in the state. The event was a collaboration between Gokhale Institute and The Unique Foundation, with big shots like Prof Suhas Palshikar and Dr Ajit Ranade in attendance.
Dr Kulkarni emphasized the importance of public infrastructure in rural areas for economic development, pointing out the uneven distribution of resources across Maharashtra villages. Prof Hatekar highlighted the state’s lack of access to vocational training, schools, and sanitation compared to other states. He even used night lights’ luminosity to gauge economic activity, showing that lower luminosity means higher deprivation.
Prof Palshikar praised the authors for their dataset but mentioned socio-political factors that could affect the data accuracy, like temporary roads and unused school toilets. Dr Ranade stressed the role of political machinery in addressing economic challenges at a grassroots level.
The event ended with a lively Q&A session where Gokhale Institute faculty members raised thought-provoking questions, and the authors shared their insights and experiences. Looks like Maharashtra has some catching up to do!
