The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, a key scheme of the Mahayuti coalition, helped secure a big win in the recent assembly elections in Pune. But now, two weeks after the results were announced, there’s been no word on the next payout for December, leaving women beneficiaries unsure.
Before the election, the government deposited Rs 3,000 for October and November into eligible women’s accounts under the scheme. They also promised to raise the monthly amount from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100. But as December rolls around, there’s no clarity on whether the promised Rs 1,500 will be paid out, causing confusion among the women.
A senior government official has said that women can expect a combined payout of Rs 3,000 for December and January before Makar Sankranti on January 14. While this is reassuring, the delay has led to doubts about the government’s commitment to its promises.
The scheme was a major talking point during the election campaign, with the opposition calling it a gimmick and the ruling coalition pledging to increase its benefits post-election. Now, with the Mahayuti in power, the lack of communication on the next instalment has raised concerns.
Government insiders blame the delay on the challenges of forming the cabinet and preparing for the upcoming winter session. But according to the senior official, the women will receive their combined payout before Makar Sankranti.
