Residents of Junnar taluka in Pune have been facing a growing concern over leopard encounters, especially for shepherds who work in outdoor areas. To address this issue, the Maharashtra Forest Department’s Junnar Division has taken proactive measures to protect the local population.

The Forest Department has recently acquired 400 solar lamps and 400 tents, which are being distributed to shepherds and residents in vulnerable areas. These resources aim to provide better visibility at night and protection from the elements, ultimately reducing the risk of leopard attacks.

In the first phase of distribution, 85 solar lamps and tents have already been given out, with the remaining units to follow soon. Authorities like Amol Satpute, Sub-Conservator of Forests, and Lahu Thokal, Forest Range Officer of Otur, have highlighted the importance of these safety measures in safeguarding shepherds and improving their living conditions.

The initiative has garnered support from local officials, leaders, and residents, who have expressed their gratitude for the efforts to ensure their safety against wildlife threats. Overall, this proactive step by the Forest Department is a positive move towards addressing the challenges posed by increasing leopard encounters in the region and providing residents with the necessary tools for their protection.
