In response to heavy rainfall causing severe flooding in Pune, the PMC has taken bold action by cutting unauthorized optical fiber cables obstructing stormwater lines. The flooding, exacerbated by clogged drainage systems, affected key areas such as Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and Pune University Road.

Officials discovered that optical fiber cables were blocking water flow on Sinhagad Road and other locations. Unauthorized constructions on nalas were also identified as contributing to the waterlogging. The PMC and traffic police visited affected sites to assess the situation.

During inspections, cables were found in stormwater drains at multiple locations and promptly cut to restore water flow. Additional blockages were discovered between Vadgaon bridge and Warje bridge, which were immediately cleaned by the PMC.

Unauthorized constructions in areas like Dhanori and Vadgaon Sheri were found to narrow nalas, worsening waterlogging. The PMC has requested departments to clear these encroachments and improve infrastructure maintenance.

The construction of Pune Metro Line 3 and buried stormwater drain chambers from road resurfacing projects also contributed to flooding. The PMC has initiated actions against contractors to address these issues.

Officials have been instructed to cut any optical fiber cables in stormwater drains and take action against violators. Civic activists and political parties are calling for stricter enforcement and accountability from the PMC to prevent future incidents. MPs and MLAs have urged the PMC to improve pre-monsoon preparations and thoroughly clean stormwater lines.
