Construction activities in Pune have been identified as a major cause of air pollution in the city. To combat this issue, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken steps to reduce pollution from construction sites. Builders have been instructed to adhere to guidelines set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to minimize dust and pollution.
City Chief Engineer Prashant Waghmare revealed that construction projects in areas like Kothrud, Baner, Balewadi, and Hadapsar have been producing massive amounts of dust, contributing to poor air quality. The PMC has now given builders a deadline of eight days to comply with the guidelines, after which penal action will be taken against those who fail to do so.
The guidelines include building 25-ft high tin sheet compounds around construction sites, covering under-construction areas with wet green cloth to prevent dust from rising, sprinkling water on construction sites, and covering debris during transportation. Despite these rules being in place for some time, many builders have been ignoring them, leading to increased pollution levels in the city.
It is crucial for developers, architects, and construction debris transporters to follow these guidelines to protect the health of citizens and reduce pollution levels in Pune. By taking these measures seriously, construction activities can be carried out in a more environmentally friendly manner, benefiting both the city and its residents.
