The Maharashtra railway network is set to receive a major facelift with an investment of ₹1.6 lakh crore in infrastructure projects, with a spotlight on the transformation of the Pune-Daund railway corridor. Plans are in place to develop Shivajinagar and Uruli Kanchan into key terminal hubs, as announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
Key developments in the Pune-Daund corridor include the modernization and expansion of railway infrastructure, with initiatives such as developing Shivajinagar station as a terminal hub, creating a state-of-the-art terminal at Uruli Kanchan, upgrading Pune station, adding third and fourth lines between Pune and Lonavala, and initiating a new line connecting Pune and Ahmednagar.
During the session, Baramati MP Supriya Sule raised concerns about reduced train halts at important stations like Daund, Nira, Baramati, and Jejuri. Minister Vaishnav assured Sule that the ministry would review and address these concerns, while also appreciating feedback on improvements in station cleanliness.
Maharashtra has allocated ₹15,554 crore for railway projects, with a focus on station redevelopment, enhanced connectivity, and increased investment. The Pune-Daund corridor is crucial for regional connectivity, supporting passenger and freight movement in one of the state’s busiest zones.
The government’s vision for a modern and efficient transportation network in Maharashtra includes boosting regional economic activities, improving connectivity to key business hubs, and enhancing passenger convenience through upgraded stations and facilities. The state’s rail network is on track to become a model of progress and connectivity with significant investments and a clear roadmap ahead.
