Shivajinagar, 13th December 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering demolishing a causeway near the Omkareshwar Temple due to safety concerns and its obstruction to the flow of water in the riverbed. The causeway, built over 55 years ago, is no longer used for transportation and has become a safety hazard.

Officials from the PMC have stated that the causeway frequently becomes clogged with water and garbage, leading to blocked water flow in the Mutha River during the monsoon season. The structure is also in poor condition, with potholes posing a risk to the public.

Repairing the causeway would cost around Rs 39 lakh, but officials believe that the structure would only have an additional lifespan of 8 years. With the presence of other nearby causeways that are actively used for transportation, the PMC sees the demolition as the best course of action.

If approved, the demolition of the causeway will allow for improved riverbank development projects and better water flow during heavy rains. The proposal will undergo further review by the Standing Committee and the General Body for final approval, marking a significant step in the city’s efforts to address flooding and improve infrastructure.
