Swargate, 13th December 2024: In a shocking incident, a 61-year-old retired bank employee from Shivdarshan fell prey to a sophisticated credit card scam, losing a whopping ₹33 lakh in just six transactions. The retired special assistant from a public sector bank shared her banking details after unknowingly downloading a fraudulent Android Package Kit (APK) file.

According to the victim’s complaint to the Parvati police, she received a call on December 8 from someone claiming to be from her former bank. The caller, who seemed very convincing and even knew which bank she had worked for, instructed her to download an APK file for credit card application verification and provide her bank account details.

After following the scammer’s directions, the victim downloaded the file, granted permissions, and entered her personal and banking information. The next day, she received another call asking about a ₹5 lakh RTGS transaction, which she had not initiated. Shortly after, she received a message confirming the unauthorized transaction.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, the woman rushed to her bank and discovered that a total of ₹33 lakh had been fraudulently taken from her accounts in multiple transactions across different branches using phone banking services.

Officials at the Parvati police station confirmed the details of the incident, stating that the victim had clicked on a credit card application link on her Facebook page on December 7, believing it to be legitimate. This led to her falling into the trap of the scammer posing as a bank representative, who convinced her to download the malicious APK file, granting him access to her phone and banking details.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the law, and efforts are underway to track down the fraudster. Authorities are advising the public to be cautious when sharing personal or financial information online and to always verify the authenticity of communication from banks or financial institutions to avoid falling victim to such scams.
