It’s no secret that the traffic situation in Pune has been a major headache for residents and commuters alike. But fear not, dear reader, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has come to the rescue once again with a new proposal to ease congestion in Koregaon Park.
The PMC has set its sights on constructing an underpass to alleviate traffic woes on the busy road stretch connecting Mundhwa to Magarpatta. With an estimated cost of ₹67.3 crore, this project aims to tackle the frequent traffic jams that plague key junctions like Kad Vasti and Jehangir Chowk.
This underpass, to be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, is just the latest in a series of initiatives by the PMC to combat the increasing vehicular congestion in the area. Earlier plans for an underpass at Mundhwa Chowk have already been set in motion to improve access to the Kharadi bypass.
A senior PMC official revealed, “We have conducted initial surveys for the proposed underpass at Kad Vasti junction, located near Tadigutta Chowk en route to Magarpatta. Private developers are being encouraged to take on this project through a PPP and credit note model, allowing them to use credit notes for other infrastructure projects in the future.”
With residential and commercial growth booming in Nagar Road, Mundhwa, Magarpatta, and Hadapsar, the need for effective traffic solutions has never been more urgent. Flyovers and underpasses are being touted as critical measures to reduce travel time and enhance road efficiency.
Local residents have been vocal about their frustrations with the traffic snarls at major junctions like Mundhwa Chowk, Kad Vasti, and Tadigutta Chowk, so this proposed underpass is sure to be met with relief and anticipation.
But the PMC isn’t stopping there. Plans are in the works to widen key road stretches to further improve traffic flow. For instance, the PMC is collaborating with the Defence Department to expand the road connecting Tadigutta Chowk to North Main Road, while recent efforts to clear encroachments near Mundhwa Junction have already made a noticeable difference in creating more space for vehicles.
So, buckle up, Puneites, because smoother roads may soon be on the horizon thanks to the PMC’s proactive measures to tackle traffic congestion in Koregaon Park and beyond.
