The Maharashtra state government has thrown a curveball in the ongoing election process for cooperative societies, announcing the postponement of elections until December 31, 2024. This decision affects a whopping 29,429 cooperative societies waiting for elections and another 7,109 currently in progress.
So, why the delay? Well, it seems officials and staff from the Cooperative Department are being pulled in to focus on preparations for the upcoming legislative elections. This means resources and personnel need to be shifted around, resulting in the cooperative elections taking a backseat.
In Pune, this move will hit hard, particularly impacting 3,048 cooperative societies in the region. Within the city, 828 societies will feel the delay, while 2,220 societies in rural areas will also be affected.
But not everyone is in the same boat. Certain cooperative societies are exempt from the postponement, including those with 250 or fewer members, societies with court-mandated elections, and those just needing to select a president or vice president.
For the rest of the cooperative societies, the elections will be paused at their current stage until further notice. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing situation.
