In a concerning turn of events, over 40 pigs have mysteriously died in Pune’s Kothrud area since the beginning of February, sparking fears of a possible public health crisis. The discovery of eight more carcasses yesterday has only heightened anxiety among residents, particularly those living near the Kothrud Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) Depot.

The deaths seem to be centered around a drain between Bharti Nagar and Bhimale Tower, where the decomposing carcasses have not only emitted foul odors but also raised questions about the safety of the environment. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been working tirelessly to determine the cause of death, but the advanced state of decomposition has made it a challenging task.

Dr. Sarika Funde, PMC’s veterinary officer, expressed frustration over the inconclusive post-mortem examinations due to the decay of the carcasses. To gather more information, blood samples from live pigs in the area have been sent to the state animal laboratory for analysis.

The recent spike in pig deaths follows a disturbing trend, with 12 more pigs found dead on 6th February on top of the 20 reported earlier in the week. Residents suspect that the pigs may be consuming contaminated water from the drain, which is known to carry untreated sewage and industrial waste.

While the PMC has taken steps to remove the carcasses for incineration, the lack of clarity surrounding the cause of death has led to speculation about poisoning, disease, or environmental toxins. As authorities continue their investigation, concerns about potential risks to human health are on the rise.
