Hey there, Pune peeps! Looks like the PMC is finally taking steps to address the pesky flooding issue in central Pune. About time, right? So, here’s the scoop – they’re planning to spruce up seven culverts, including the ones along the Nagzari Nala. These culverts are pretty old, like 40 to 50 years old, and are struggling to handle the increased water flow, especially when it pours cats and dogs.
The PMC is dropping a cool ₹16 crore on this renovation project, which they’re funding under the Urban Flood Management scheme of the 15th Finance Commission. With a little help from the National Disaster Management Authority, of course. Along with the Nagzari Nala, they’re widening culverts in five other areas to prevent water from wreaking havoc on nearby properties.
You know what the problem is, right? Encroachments and rapid urbanization have seriously cramped the Nagzari Nala’s style, reducing its drainage capacity. And with the city growing like crazy, the drainage pipes just can’t keep up. This has led to some serious flooding in residential areas, the timber market, and shops in Bhawani Peth. Not fun.
But fear not, Puneites! The PMC is on it. They’re beefing up the culverts, increasing their size and height, and upgrading those water-carrying pipes to boost drainage capacity. The goal? No more flooding, and no more water damage to homes and businesses. Sounds like a plan, right?
So, keep an eye out for renovation work at these locations: Vitthal Mandir in Wanwadi, Sanskriti School in Undri, Pandit Nehru Road in Bhawani Peth (two spots), Oxygen Park in Vadgaon Sheri, Waghjai Mandir in Kondhwa, and Panch Pandav Society in Shivajinagar. Stay dry, Pune!
