The transport infrastructure landscape in Maharashtra is undergoing rapid advancements, especially with the upcoming Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly Elections on the horizon. Pune, in particular, is set to benefit greatly as the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has invited bids for the appointment of a General Consultant (GC) for the highly anticipated High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) Metro, also known as the Ring Line Metro. This project, spanning 36 kilometers and featuring 44 stations, is designed to encircle the entire city of Pune.
The Pune Ring Line Metro project is expected to bring about a significant transformation in the city’s transportation system, making it a vital addition to its infrastructure. MahaMetro recently issued a tender notice for Phase 2 of the project, with the selected GC tasked with overseeing design, supervision, safety protocols, quality control, and contract management. The estimated cost for this five-year contract is ₹2,400 crore.
In Phase 2, significant developments have already taken place, with the initial major contract, Package Consul-01, in progress since 2021. A draft Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 2 was submitted by MahaMetro to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in September 2022, outlining various routes totaling 82.5 kilometers. Plans for Phase 2 have since been revised, with two elevated extensions of the Aqua Line included in the Phase 1A project.
Aside from the Ring Line Metro project, Pune Metro has also invited tenders for the design and construction of underground stations at key locations such as Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. These stations will be part of the Swargate-Katraj extension of the Purple Line, which currently runs from PCMC to Swargate.
The recent inauguration of the foundation stone for the Swargate-Katraj extension by Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks another significant milestone in Pune’s metro expansion efforts. The city’s transportation infrastructure is steadily improving, with these developments set to benefit its citizens in the near future.
