Hey Pune, have you heard about the recent incident involving the collapse of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg district? It’s got everyone talking and raising concerns about the safety of statues in our city. But don’t worry, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is on it!
The PMC has decided to launch a structural audit of all statues in Pune to make sure they’re safe and sound. Initial inspections have shown that some statues might need some repairs. To really get a good look at the condition of older statues, the PMC is bringing in some high-tech help with the ‘Ultrasonic Tomography Test.’
The Building Design Department of the PMC is leading the charge on this audit. They’re checking out all the statues under their jurisdiction to ensure they’re structurally sound. Some of these statues are pretty old, like 40 to 50 years old, so it’s important to make sure they’re still holding up.
Yuvraj Deshmukh, Chief Engineer of the Building Department, said, “We’re using top-of-the-line equipment to check out the insides of these statues. Even if they look good on the outside, we need to know they’re strong on the inside too.”
There are 80 statues in total that the PMC is inspecting, both half-length and full-length ones. These statues are a big part of our city’s cultural heritage, so keeping them safe is a top priority. The first phase of inspections has already begun, focusing on statues that are between 40 to 45 years old.
Even though some of these statues might look fine from the outside, the PMC isn’t taking any chances. They’ve already started making minor repairs where needed, and they’ll continue to do so as they go along.
To make sure these inspections go smoothly, the PMC will be issuing a tender for the equipment and services needed. Deshmukh said, “We want to make sure everything is done transparently and properly, so we’ll be going through a tendering process to get everything we need.”
So, Pune, rest assured that our city’s statues are in good hands. The PMC is working hard to make sure they’re safe for years to come.
