The Chipko Padyatra organized by Pune River Revival in Baner on 10th February 2025 saw a massive turnout of citizens from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. People of all ages, including students, senior citizens, environmentalists, and residents from different areas, gathered to advocate for the protection of riverside ecosystems.
Prominent figures like Sonam Wangchuk, Vandana Chavan, RJ Sangram, and Sayaji Shinde were present at the event, highlighting the importance of safeguarding Pune’s riverbanks and the old-growth trees that line them. Participants emphasized the shared responsibility of preserving the river for the city’s environmental health.
During the march, hundreds of participants symbolically hugged trees along the riverbanks to show their commitment to protecting natural resources. The “Nadi Ki Baat” initiative included writing thousands of letters to the Prime Minister urging action on river conservation. Cultural expressions, such as children performing songs and poems dedicated to river preservation and Sayaji Shinde reciting a self-composed poem, were also part of the event.
Pune River Revival outlined key demands for authorities, including ceasing sewage discharge into the river, preventing the reduction of the river’s width, protecting trees and ecosystems along the riverbanks, safeguarding groundwater sources, and ensuring eco-friendly and sustainable riverbank improvement projects. The organization also called for the use of local, nature-based products and technologies in conservation efforts and for citizen and expert involvement in decision-making processes to ensure transparency.
