Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol is advocating for Pune to host the National Games once again, citing the city’s ability to organize large sporting events. Speaking at the Sub Junior National Judo Tournament, Mohol emphasized the importance of promoting martial arts like judo and their connection to traditional sports.
During his address, Mohol noted the similarities between judo and wrestling, stating that many judo moves are also used in wrestling. The tournament was kicked off with the lighting of a traditional lamp, marking the beginning of the competition.
Entrepreneur and sports enthusiast Punit Balan announced a generous cash award of ₹10 lakh for the medal winners in the tournament. The award amounts are as follows: ₹11,000 for gold medalists, ₹7,000 for silver medalists, and ₹5,000 for each of the two bronze medalists.
The event saw the presence of several key figures in the sports community, including Tathagata Mukherjee, Virender Vashist, and Dronacharya Awardee Jiwan Sharma. Paris Olympic Silver Medallist Sachin Khilari was also in attendance as a special guest.
With over 200 boys and girls from 29 states participating in the tournament, the Sub Junior National Judo Tournament is set to be a highly competitive event. The importance of bringing the National Games back to Pune was highlighted by Mohol, who praised the city’s infrastructure and passion for sports.
The event serves as a platform to inspire and empower young athletes, with Mohol’s vision for national-level events, Balan’s financial support, and the participation of distinguished athletes all contributing to the growth of sports in India.
