The Pune-Mumbai expressway recently experienced severe traffic congestion as thousands of tourists traveled to popular holiday destinations like Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, and Goa to celebrate Christmas and New Year. The heavy influx of vehicles led to long queues and hours of delays, marking one of the busiest travel periods on this critical route.
The most affected stretch was the Khandala Ghat section, where a 12-km-long traffic jam was reported on the Mumbai-to-Pune route. From Wednesday onwards, vehicles were queued up for miles, leaving countless travelers stranded for extended periods.
The traffic snarls were primarily caused by the influx of tourists, breakdowns of several vehicles along the route, and the holiday travel rush during the Christmas and New Year season.
To manage the overwhelming traffic, the traffic and highway police took several measures such as halting heavy vehicles, diverting lanes, and issuing advisories to tourists to plan their journeys carefully.
Frustrated commuters took to social media to express their grievances, highlighting the need for better traffic management during peak travel periods. The police issued recommendations for travelers to plan ahead, follow traffic rules, maintain their vehicles, and consider alternative routes or public transportation to avoid similar situations in the future.
The massive jams on the expressway underscore the challenges of managing increased traffic during holiday seasons, as more people opt for road travel to nearby destinations. Without proper planning and adherence to traffic rules, the expressway faces significant pressure, particularly during festive periods.
