Sinhagad, 12th March 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is cracking down on private reverse osmosis (RO) water purification projects in response to a surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune. A total of 43 RO projects on Sinhagad Road have been shut down for failing to comply with regulations.

The areas of Khadakwasla, Kirkitwadi, Nanded, Dhayari, and nearby regions have reported several cases of GBS, with contaminated water supply being identified as a key factor. A water quality inspection conducted by PMC revealed that water from private RO plants in these areas was contaminated, leading to the implementation of stricter operational guidelines for such projects.

Following complaints of violations, officials from PMC’s Water Supply Department conducted inspections on Sinhagad Road and found multiple RO plants not meeting the prescribed standards. As a result, 43 projects were ordered to cease operations until they met compliance requirements.

In response to the GBS outbreak, PMC has been providing free treatment at municipal hospitals and financial aid to eligible patients under the Urban Poor Scheme. While discussions are ongoing about discontinuing financial assistance as the disease outbreak subsides, regular inspections of RO projects will continue to ensure safety standards are met.

The breakdown of closed RO projects includes 5 in Khadakwasla, 8 in Kirkitwadi, 21 in Narhe Village, and 9 in Nanded Village. PMC officials are committed to enforcing regulations to protect public health and prevent further outbreaks of waterborne illnesses.
