Hey there, folks! Here’s a piece of news that may leave you buzzing with shock. A bee attack at Shivneri Fort on Sunday left a whopping 47 people injured, including devotees of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and tourists. Ouch!
The incident happened just a day before the traditional celebration of Shiv Jayanti, which was set to take place on Monday as per the Hindu calendar. Talk about bad timing, right? The attack went down around 9 am near the pathway leading to the Shivai Devi temple.
Eyewitnesses spilled the tea that the bees went on the offensive after some tourists allegedly decided to throw stones at their hive, which clearly ticked them off. On top of that, the smoke from torches carried by devotees carrying the sacred Shivjyot may have also ruffled their wings, triggering a full-on attack mode.
Thankfully, rescue teams swooped in to save the day, with personnel from the forest department, archaeology department, and the Junnar Rescue Team all jumping into action. The injured were quickly whisked away to Chhatrapati Shivaji Rural Hospital in Junnar, where Dr. Zahid Hasan worked his medical magic. Two unlucky individuals ended up with severe injuries, though.
The incident actually went down during a cleanliness drive organized by MP Nilesh Lanke’s foundation. Lanke himself was on the scene and even made a visit to the hospital to check on the injured. Tourists from all over the place, including Ghatkopar, Rahuri, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Khadakwasla, Dhule, Thane, and Mumbai, were caught up in the buzz.
Word on the street is that bees are pretty sensitive little critters, especially when it comes to strong scents like incense, perfumes, and cosmetics. Other things that can set them off include loud noises near their hives, smoking or lighting fires nearby, tossing things at their hives, and even using selfie sticks too close for comfort. Yikes!
Forest Range Officer Pradeep Chavan and Archaeology Department official Gokul Dabhade were among the heroes who rushed to the scene to lend a helping hand. Let’s all remember to give bees their space, folks, and hopefully avoid any more sticky situations like this one!
