1. Pune, India is currently facing a health crisis as 124 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) have been confirmed out of 149 suspected cases.
  2. The cause of death for one patient was identified as respiratory failure with autonomic dysfunction, quadriplegia, and GBS, compounded by hypertension. The patient had no recent travel history.
  3. Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, Joint Director of Health Services in Maharashtra, reported that 31 patients are on oxygen support and 28 are on ventilator support.
  4. The cases are spread across Pune district, with the majority in Pune Municipal Corporation areas and newly added villages.
  5. Two suspected GBS-related deaths were reported in Pune on Friday, a 36-year-old man from Pimple Gurav and a 60-year-old man from DSK Vishwa in Dhayari.
  6. To combat the outbreak, PMC’s health chief Dr. Nina Borade announced the deployment of a mobile clinic to treat gastroenteritis patients in affected areas, with 80 patients treated so far.
  7. Free GBS treatment is available at Kamla Nehru Hospital, and PMC will cover the cost of nerve conduction velocity tests for diagnosis. Physiotherapy services for discharged GBS patients are also available at Laigude Hospital.
