Hey Pune peeps, it’s time to pay attention to your health! A total of 67 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported in our city and surrounding areas. That’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
So, what exactly is GBS? Well, it’s a rare neurological disorder that can start with symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, cough, and cold. After a few days, it can progress to muscle weakness, making it hard to move around. In severe cases, breathing can even be affected, requiring ventilator support.
Dr. Eknath Pawar, the Dean of Sassoon Hospital, shared some insights on the disease. He mentioned that early diagnosis is key, and treatment involves plasma exchange and IVIG injections. The good news is that most patients recover well with proper care.
Currently, 14 patients are being treated at Sassoon Hospital, including two children. While some are in critical condition, others are stable and receiving the necessary attention. Most cases are from areas like Sinhagad Road, Kirkitwadi, and Dhankawadi, with a few from outside Pune.
Dr. Pawar also stressed the importance of hygiene and safe drinking water. Boiling water before consumption, using filters, and maintaining good hand and foot hygiene are crucial steps to prevent the spread of GBS. If you notice any symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical help.
The Pune Municipal Corporation is also on the case, inspecting water sources in affected areas and providing safe drinking water to residents. Let’s all do our part to stay healthy and keep GBS at bay!
